3/20/09, 3/21/09 & 3/22/09- Takedowns

3/20/09
I drilled with Ned during class. It was his first takedowns class so I had to show him a lot of the stuff we were working on. I like this slower tempo as I don't get as beat up and it helps me break the technique down more. The class focused primarily on the fireman's carry from the russian 2 on 1. Our coach emphasized the "girl sit" to complete the move and carry the guy over you.

We did sharkies, my first time out I defended a single leg and wound up fighting to gain position. I staid in and went up against Jamie who promptly took me down with a double leg and now with it being loser stays in I had to go up against Tom. Tom is a shorter guy but is deceiving strong. His low center of gravity made it tough form me to get underneath him and we went at it for a little while, both defending each others shots. At the very end i was able to stuff a shot and as he stood back up I got a knee pick and took him down. Good job on his end!!!

3/20/09 No GI
No gi class was all about armbar escapes. We did the hitchhiker escape, a backwards rool escape which I couldn't do and a limp arm escape. I didn't do the open mat because I was a little beat up. I did stick around to watch though.

3/21/09 - Private
I took a private with our takedowns coach Marc Stevens....great wrestler, a purple belt in JJ. I learn a lot from him. I paired up with a guy Cole and we worked together. The private covered lots of stuff like the granby roll, duck unders, sit outs and knee switches....there were lots of drills and a lot of useful information. At the end of the private Marc had me and Cole do live takedowns. There were lots of good back and forth with me hitting a nice armdrag and I also setup up a nice high-c and a double leg. I also defended a single leg very well during one of cole's attempts.

One problem occurred afterwards and that is there was pea sized bump below my knee cap. My knee is pretty sore too. I iced it a couple time during the rest of the day. I also purchase some Asics super sleeve knee pads for future use. The pea has gone away but my knee is a little tender. It doesn't appear to be anything serious, just over-use. I began taking Glucosamine and MSM to try to keep my joints healthy.
