In class we drilled triangle from the guard. We would set up the triangle using either the push through attack or the knee smash. To end the class our instructor had us do some live passing the guard drills. 9 People were laid out on the mats and who ever was open, the next up in line would go to that person. It started with all the blue belts and above in the center. My performance in the drill was okay, I was able to pass the guard pretty easily but when it was me defending guard passes I didn't do so well. Obviously a major hole in my game right now.
Open Mat
I was originally planning on sitting out open mat....and I managed to do so for the first 20 minutes or so. Then a guy Chris sat next to me, asked if I wanted to roll and I couldn't resist. Chris recently got promoted to a green belt (probably should be a blue) so I thought it would be a good test on where I am. Well, Chris really gave me a hard time. One thing I noticed is that our games are fairly similar. We both like compression chokes/guillotine chokes from halfguard, we both like the same sweeps, we both like to pass the guard similarly and I guess us being around the same size and build that would make sense.
This ended up being a pretty tough battle with us both getting position on each other and the other either scrambling or sweeping to reverse position. We both had each other in submissions (I had an armbar and 2 guillotine attempts) that threatened the other person but were unable to finish. We were both very evenly matched, with I say Chris maybe being slightly better than I am. Toward the end of our roll I began running out of steam...Chris ended up getting mount on me and I let him sink in an americana.
Tournament Training
Shortly after rolling a couple guys heading to Grapplers Quest next week asked if we wanted to drill takedowns and rolling. We started with sharkies and I started out in the middle...I had a pretty good run hitting a few takedowns in a row including one nice arm spin on Spooches. Of notable takedowns I was also able to hit a nice high crotch off biceps control and an armdrag. We ended up doing this for quite a while. At the end I was totally drained with my arms in a lot of pain (biceps from impact). I really need to take a few days off and heal. My body is sore and my stamina is shot. Rest will do me good.
